Schools Out

Today is my 11 year old daughter's graduation from 5th grade. At 2 o'clock I will dutifully take my place with my husband and his mother. I will snap pictures of her in her pink polka dot dress and secretly wave to her during the ceremony. Afterward we will hit the local ice cream shop that gives away free cones on the last day of school with her sister who will have just emerged from the chemistry final. Then there is a party for her class at a classmates house. And then....what?

Tomorrow I hope to drag her to the Public Market with me, and maybe even to Goodwill. I will seduce her with the possibility of cheap Full House books. Who knows...it could happen. But, it is not quite so easy to get her to go junkin' with me these days. Gone are the days of strapping her into her carseat and promising her a frosty from the drive thru. When I suggest a "Junkin' Day" I get rolling eyes and ughs and screams of "you take too long!!!!"

But every once in a while, I know she will be in the mood and we'll hit the trail, me with my ones and her with her purse full-a change. Will will travel unknown neighborhoods, rummage thru under table treasure boxes, in search of a wee bit of treasure.

And, as we get back in the car and head to the drive thru, I'll realize that we've already got the best treasure there is.
